Heading to sunshine

Heading to sunshine

Am getting ready to do the Northern Snow Bird migration to southern Florida.  It’s my first time and I can’t wait to wear shorts, sandles and Ts for a week.  No definitive plan, we are just going to meander around the Keys for a few days and bask in the sunshine and warm waters.

Safari time

Safari time

Well not for me…I don’t get to go that far away.  However, Ryann, is on a two month trip to Kenya and Tanzania to pursue her goal of visiting Africa.  She is spending today on the Serengeti to take a safari with a good friend.  I can’t wait to hear how amazing it is.  She left about two weeks ago with a full backpack.  So far she has met lots of other travelers and is having a fantastic time.  I’m so proud of her making this solo trip!

Seattle was a treat

Seattle was a treat

Spent last weekend in Seattle with our good friends Scott and Terri who live just north of the city.  Our good friends Mary Kay and Paul also came – so we had a full house and a great time!  Just have to say, if I had to live somewhere else, Seattle would be high on the list.  Ocean, mountains and a great temperate growing climate for flowers. We spent our first day, up at 5am to beat the tides and head out into Puget Sound at 6am.  It was stunningly beautiful that day.  Blue skies and amazing views. We dropped five crap pots into the Sound while we wandered all around the islands.  The salmon had started running and we were going to fish for Lumpies and Chinooks.  Fishing didn’t turn out too well – we only...

Viva Las Vegas

Viva Las Vegas

Having never been to Las Vegas nor been allured by its “charms” – I crazily booked a weekend for Valentine’s.  Going with the lower cost package I thought myself a great deal maker and I admit I did great with the accommodations….it was the horrid flights thru Detroit that will mar my memories for years to come.  But enough of that for now….Enter the magical world of Vegas.   Meet the front entry of the Aria Resort on the Strip, one of the newest and hottest spots in Vegas and home to the show “Viva Elvis” by Cirque de Soleil. Hundreds of beautiful red lanterns for the Chinese New Year greeted us upon our arrival in the lobby of this beautiful hotel.  Trust me, no expense...

California, here we come,,,,

California, here we come,,,,

I don’t even know how to describe how much I love northern California.  I could totally see myself with a little bungalow somewhere growing lemon, olive and almond trees.  I’ve been back for about two weeks and already want to plan the next trip.  Some snowbirds love the south or the Caribbean, not me.  I’ll take the Napa Valley or the Sierra Nevada any day. We flew into Sacramento, got our rented car and headed to Napa Valley.  Our first stop was the Tamber Bay Winery in Yountville, CA.  The wonderful couple who run this winery gave us a private wine tasting on their back porch.  What a way to first learn about Napa, wine, food and the history of the area. Barry and Jennifer were just wonderful in hosting...

Laissez le bons temp roulez – New Orleans

Laissez le bons temp roulez – New Orleans

Raine and I went for a short vacation in New Orleans, LA. We found a sweet little hotel called Le Richelieu, on the far side of the French Quarter. From there we wandered the streets of the Quarter soaking in the great architecture, food, music, history and culture. New Orleans has always been my favorite American city (beside Madison) and I’ve been there 5 times now. I love the gritty and sometimes, smelly city filled with history, nooks and crannies. One day we did a plantation run along the Mississippi. The Oaks Alley Plantation was, as you can see just stunning. What a dichotomy of people and a way of life. It was a very thought provoking visit to walk through slave quarters and see and feel the way African Americans lived in the South and were ...
