Madison’s 2012 Orchid Quest did not disappoint. Hundreds and hundreds of orchids from the friendly Phalaenopsis (Phals) and Paphiopedilum (Paps) to exotic Masdevallias. It was great to meet and talk with some of the best orchid growers in the Midwest and to learn more about these amazing flowers.

Winter blooming in Wisconsin

Yes, I know it’s been unseasonably warm here in Wisconsin. Temps today hit 51 degrees. However by tomorrow temps will be back to the seasonably cold 20 degrees with a threat of 8 inches of snow… What’s a girl to do? Make sure you have lots of orchids in the house! This orchid is new and purchased in December. It’s a basic Phalenopsis-type orchid and is super easy to keep and more importantly keep alive and have re-bloom. Sometimes even twice a year. But the big thing is once it blooms, it often go for months with new flowers. This Phalenopsis orchid is a re-bloomer. It gave me flowers last year and is bringing me more this year. Will Spring ever come this year?

Dang, it’s the end of March and I still have nothing in my outside gardens. Two weeks ago, we had two 50 degee days and since it’s back to freezing. Not liking Wisconsin at all. Thank goodness for the orchids which appreciate the sunlight and are blooming like crazy.

Gotta love orchids

 I love this time of year, my birthday batch of orchids continue to bloom while last year’s orchids come to life with the longer days as Spring quickly approaches. Orchids are such a great reward for the money. From experience, I typically stick with Phalaenopsis orchids. They will bloom for months and usually cost less than a bouquet of flowers from the local grocery store. Getting your money’s worth

If you really like a good return on an investment, Orchids are the real deal. Yes, I love my summer perennials in the yard, they give a great blast of color for a couple of weeks, Orchids on the other hand are just the gift that keeps giving. The orchids pictures above are two and three years old. This year, the flowers started blooming in about March and have been going strong ever since.
