Reflection

Took some time off from blogging to focus on other places in my life.  Since my last blog post in August, I’ve made several changes.  I call it Rylee 2.0 and so far I’ve done pretty well. Here’s a list of the highlights: Quit smoking October 1, 2012 Started a fitness boot camp Took a brief sabbatical from 5NINES Started volunteering at the Humane Society once a week cleaning critter and cat cages Got my house, gardens and life in order Reassessed my life and recommitted myself to the important things – family,  friends, dogs, good people and good initiatives Strive to be warm-hearted Went out for Halloween in a costume! Got my passport renewed so I can leave anytime I want Went to New York City for the first time and fell in love...

A portrait

A portrait

A few years ago, I fostered an amazing female German Shepherd, who I named Mira.  Like the usual rescued dog, she was a day away from euthanasia.  I got the call and asked if I could take another dog the next day.  I saw a photo of scawny sabled GSD and thought – oh lord, I’ll have her around for a while.  But she melted my heart.  I picked her up and I fell in love with that dog.  She was so smart, agile and you could see her thinking her way through situations.  She was the one foster dog  that I regret not keeping.  Yet, I know I’m a one GSD-woman and I already had my Teiko boy. I remember meeting her new family with Mira by my side.  They were a retired couple with 200 acres of woodlands outside of Tomah.  They told me about...

Spectacular sunset

Spectacular sunset

Got out on Lake Mendota last week with some friends.  The temps on land were hovering in the upper 90s.  But thank the stars above, the breeze over the lake really made things wonderful. All around us that night were thunderstorms of which no rain fell in my gardens….  I’m still glad though, because they made just the most amazing sunset I’ve seen in a while.

The drought of 2012

The drought of 2012

Well after two weeks of temps in to 90s and 100s with sunny days and NO rain, most of my perennials have survived.  They aren’t pretty but they are alive.  The ones that were on death’s door have been brought indoors, watered and sit in conditioned space…  They aren’t quite happy but they are still alive….  I hope to take them back outside soon. Here in Madison, we haven’t had rain in weeks.  It got so hot today that one of the garden hoses sprung a leak (which had a secondary “on” button).  I came home to find my garden being watered and the birds very happy with their bath full of water, hence the “etc”...

Music from my kid days

I grew up in the 70s.  The best education I got in music was the fantastic music teacher at Emerson Elementary who encouraged each of us to feel music and express it however we could.  I got a guitar in the 4th grade and learned to strum a few chords.  That lead me to the french horn (oh, boy…) and the clarinet in middle school.  I put the world out of its misery by 7th grade…. I knew by then I should just appreciate the music and not try to make it…. Where I want to go with this story is that music has always had a solid hold and place in my life.  And while I don’t play an instrument today….I so love to hear it and it makes me feel so good. So many songs have a hook in my memory to a specific day, experience or feel. I grew up...

Pan Seared Scallops and Morels- Rylee’s Surf and Turf

Pan Seared Scallops and Morels- Rylee’s Surf and Turf

Got the email from Steve’s in Madison that New England scallops were coming in on Friday – fresh, never frozen.  They always sell out immediately.  So I reserved two pounds on Thursday.  I think of it as cheaper than buying an airline ticket to Boston…. Yes, I’m a foodie -but it wasn’t always the case, just ask my mom…. So it’s May and we are in the midst of Morel mushroom season in Wisconsin.  Morels are the earthiest, darkest and one of the best mushrooms you’ll ever eat.  Yet… I’ve never actually liked the way that they are typically served in Wisconsin – cut long like a fish filet, floured with some salt and pepper and fried.  Meh…. I was looking for something different to do with...
