It’s a zoo around here….

It appears that every baby bird born in the past two years has returned to the nest, so to speak. So far, I’ve counted six bird nests built under our decks and eaves of the house. We have swallows, robins and some bunting-kinda bird that built this amazingly creative nest with straw and plastic bits. Each year we try to keep the birds from building the nests – but unless you are on 24 hour watch, the birds outwit us every time. And it doesn’t help that our policy is that once the birds have eggs in the nest, we admit defeat. In addition to the bird families, our annual bat family has migrated back to the bat houses we have installed on the sides of our house. Last year we counted about 125 bats. I have a love/hate relationship as I get...

My car was broke into last night

My car was broke into last night

I went to walk Teiko this morning and I found the garage door was partly opened. Not thinking much about it, I continued through the garage and when I got out to the driveway, I found the passenger side door opened on my car. Yep, the car had been gone through. It appears that the only thing taken was the garage door opener. Checked the garage and everything appeared in its messy messy place. Also found a book bag lying in the driveway. It belonged to a neighbor two doors down. It appears that it was a busy night for the local thieves. Called the police to report it. An officer was at the house within 15 minutes. Imagine my surprise when I found out a neighbor further down the street actually had two cars stolen out of their garage last night. The garage door...

The Bat Cave

The Bat Cave

I’m the Bat Lady in my neighborhood. Pictured above is the side of our house at dusk. You can see the three boards going across the top. Those are the bat houses. We willingly invite the bats to live with us during the summer. It didn’t start out that way. After we moved in during the fall of 2001, we didn’t know of the resident bat colony. We quickly found out in the spring, when the bats came back. They were seemingly everywhere – even once or twice in the house. We also learned that a dark brown house on a marsh attracts a lot of bats. We quickly went on the offensive. Personally, I just wanted them gone, but I went to this website – http://www.batconservation.org/content/Batproblems.html and as a Mom and animal lover, I was...

Home Improvement: Concrete Staining

Home Improvement: Concrete Staining

In the new sauna/chill room, one of the walls is the concrete foundation wall for the house. Instead of putting up drywall, Todd and I wanted to work with with this cool surface. We found a great product by rustoleum for just the purpose of painting/staining concrete. We completed the project easily in one day. While the stains are semi-transparent, you can definitely see the nice color that has been etched into the wall. The darker area of color you see at the bottom of the wall was the stain from 20+ years of construction dirt that was piled in this space when we originally bough the house. We’ve claimed this root cellar like space to extend the house and create a nice chill room between the sauna and the outside (to the pool and hottub) Not a bad space if...

Home Projects and Improvements

Todd, my fabulous handyman and all around great guy, busted a move this weekend and tiled the shower and wall in the soon-to-be-completed sauna room. You can read more about it here –We had originally thought to go with actual slate tiles in this new room, but upon review, we felt that slate and it’s uneven nature might not be a good choice for a wet area. Slate requires annual treatment to keep it “waterproof”. We found a really nice ceremic tile at the home improvement store that had lots of variations between tiles. This works great and is about 1/4 the cost. In the photos above you can see the new shower and the before and after shot of the “chill” room that leads out to the hottub and backyard. It will be an awesome space...

Home Improvements – Decision time

Home Improvements – Decision time

Last night, Teiko helped Todd and me decide on what color slate stone to use in the sauna room. He’s so cute! The room you see below didn’t actually exist when we first brought the house six years ago – it was simply a earth shed-thing under the house that was never finished. After hauling a couple of tons of sandy construction dirt out, having a doorway cut through the foundation to connect to the house, Todd closed the area in. One weekend a couple of years ago , I even helped haul and mix 5000lbs of concrete to make the floor. Todd, our intrepid improvement guy, built the cinder block wall, installed windows and the glass doors, finished the sauna room and added a new shower stall. This weekend Todd roughed in the cedar walls. We are going to...
